Summer Reading for Middle School

English Books
Students are required to read three English books.  The English books are categorized by Accelerated Reader levels.  A student's reading level is determined by the Star report which is to be included in the final report card mailing.  See the Middle School Reading List.

Students are required to write one book report on one of the English books AND 3x5 cards for the other books showing author, title, reading level (English), number of pages, and a brief summary.  For the book report, follow the guidelines below for each grade level.

The book report and summary cards must be turned in on the first day of school.

5th & 6th Grades
Change the Ending: After reading a book, write a brief summary of how it ended. No more than ˝ page. On a separate piece of paper, write a different ending.  This must be one page. Everything is in pencil and cursive. Remember the ending has to be different; it doesn’t mean it has to be better.

Summary ˝ page (50): Brief description of characters and plot.  Detailed description of how the book ended.

Ending Change 1 page (100): Detailed description of how it ends.  Use at least 5 lines of dialogue.  (Remember: , “ and .” ) No violence or gory details.

7th Grade
Write a five paragraph essay in which you explain the plot in the first body paragraph, the characters in the second body paragraph and what you learned from reading the book in the last body paragraph. In the closing paragraph, make a recommendation as to whether a person should or should not take the time to read the book. Explain why (or why not).

8th Grade
Draw a new cover of the book using your knowledge of the conflict, themes, and symbols found within the book. Write a paragraph explaining your artistic choices. Then in 100 words write a summary of the book.

  Arabic Books
Students are required to read one Arabic book. Arabic books are available at the Pasadena Central Library AND through www.noorart.com. For the Arabic book report, use the guidelines below corresponding to the level of Arabic class the student will be in next year.
