Due to the school’s achievements in the Green Ribbon Schools recognition program and the Nature Playground’s confirmation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, New Horizon Pasadena was recommended as a top choice for Nickelodeon’s Big Help program. In April 2012, Nickelodeon selected New Horizon Pasadena out of 800 schools throughout the U.S. to participate in a special filming of one of their kids’ programs showing our students working together on our latest project, the NHS Peace Garden, combining environmental education with peace and community building. Middle school students worked with the cast of “How to Rock” on building a shed, planting fruit trees, pruning a tree, and taking soil samples. Nickelodeon presented the school with a check for $20K and slimed the Head of School, Amira Al-Sarraf.
Upon completion of the Peace Garden, Nickelodeon visited the school again in April 2017 with two Nick stars, Greg Cipes (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Daniella Monet (Paradise Run), along with the Nickelodeon crew. As part of their Earth Day promotion, the actors spent time in the garden and helped students with planting corn and fragrant plants. Nickelodeon presented the school with a $5K grant to support environmental education curriculum and future programs.
Nickelodeon, through the leadership of Producer David Bruson, continues to be a friend and supporter to the New Horizon Peace Garden.
